Our Reading Adventure Heroes

VLUU L200 / Samsung L200

A huge WELL DONE to our very first readers to earn their

                                              READING ADVENTURE OWL BADGES!

These special new badges are only awarded to those who have completed all areas of the Reading Adventure, earning the Dragon badge and all the others along the way.  They have persevered with different types of reading, accumulated all the necessary ‘footprints’ and, I hope, tried some books they might not have thought of reading before.  Let’s hope they’ve been inspired to be even more adventurous in their reading.

Congratulations to Matthew who was the first person to earn his badge’.  He has been patiently waiting for his ‘Owl’ to arrive (it must be related Errol in the Harry Potter stories).

Well done too to Esther, Emily, Henry, Edward M, Finn, Lucy, Louise, Belinda, Aimee and Edward D                  -    quite a flock* of  Owls already!

VLUU L200 / Samsung L200

Here they are with Mrs Kemp, telling Mr Quick from the Crediton Courier all about the Reading Adventure scheme.

*Did you know that the group name for owls is actually ‘A Parliament of Owls’?  Some sources also say it’s ‘A Wisdom of Owls’, which I think is a brilliant description.

TOMB SARCOPHAGUS DISCOVERED!!

SIGNIFICANT TOMB  DISCOVERED!

On Monday 15th of April, the children of Hayward’s primary were amazed when Ancient Egyptian artefacts were discovered in their forest school area.

When teaching assistant Mr Geale was planting a tree he came across some what looked like Ancient Egyptian artefacts. The two artefacts you would find on a sarcophagus from Ancient Egypt. One is a crook and the other is a whip. They are both made of solid gold.

My News interviewed Mr Geale and he said “I was very proud to discover these tools.” The police suspect they were STOLEN from the Cairo Museum! Contact PC  plod if you have any information.

On the very last day of term (Thursday 28th March) we will be raising money for CLIC Sargent on the Bramble Ward at RD&E hospital.

We are doing this to give our support to our very own Jasmine Larkman in year 5, who is bravely battling leukaemia. This is her chosen charity, which will mean that we will not be supporting Comic Relief or Children in Need at school this year. We would rather divert all our fundraising to show Jasmine we are supporting and thinking about her in the next phase of her fight against cancer.

What we are doing: The Big Buzz!!

On the last day of term children are invited to come to school in non-uniform and with a crazy hairstyle or wig.

  • The children can wear a wig or update their look with a fun new hairstyle. They can dye their hair a bright new colour – pink perhaps – or spray it just for the day!
  • There will competitions/prizes for the best new look, most fun or wacky hairstyle, as voted by the children.
  • The class that raise the most money will win an extra long playtime/time on the iPads.
  • Throughout the day some children will be holding separate events, like a dance-athon and a read-athon.
  • Jasmine will also have her own blog, which we will be adding to on the day. This will contain videos, pictures or other work to show how each class are supporting her.

In return we ask that children collect sponsorship money. We are aiming to raise £600 which is £2 per pupil.

If this total is reached on the day then Mr Hitchcock (and other members of staff he can persuade!) will let the children loose with hair clippers/gel/dye on his hair and beard!

There are two ways to collect sponsorship. The preferred way (the cheapest and easiest for the charity) is online. Please donate at: www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/jasmine3

Otherwise, you can fill out the attached sponsorship, or send some money in on the day.  If you choose to use the paper sponsorship form it is really important for your sponsors to fill out the form correctly with all of their details in order for us to claim gift aid: this can increase their donation by 25p for every £1 they donate.

This will be a fantastic day to show Jasmine we are right behind her!!

HAPPY EASTER HOLIDAYS!

HaywardOwl

The Hayward’s Librarians, Mrs Bryant and the Owl wish everyone;                                                                                                           children, families and staff; a very happy Easter Holiday.

Whilst you’re all having a lovely break from school, I do hope you’ll find some time for reading – perhaps in between nibbling chocolate eggs and bunnies.  Don’t forget to keep track of the time you spend with books, newspapers or anything else you might like to read.

Get those ‘footprints’ signed and coloured in.  We can then look forward to giving out lots more Reading Adventure badges when we get back to school.

If you’re in Crediton on Saturday 6th April (that’s in the middle of the Easter Holiday), do go along to Crediton Book Shop where there will be lots of exciting activities going on:  Nick Arnold, the author of the ‘Horrible Science’ books will be there, as well as other local authors.  There will be story-telling sessions and competitions.

Have a happy, safe and restful holiday.

Best wishes from Mrs Bryant and the Hayward’s Librarians
