D-Day 75th Anniversary

On 6th June 2019, we remembered the sacrifice of those involved in the D-Day landings, on Normandy's beaches in 1944. Here are some of the diary entries we wrote as if we were on the landing crafts.

Dear Diary,

I’m just about to land on Sword Beach and I, like most people, am scared to death. My stomach is jumping up and down pretty fast. I’m pretty sure this is gonna turn out nasty, but I don’t know! EW

Dear Diary,

It was a very hard and painful day today. First, all of us soldiers had to get up at 3o’clock in the morning cause, the commander decided we had to sneak up on the Germans again (it never works anyway)…

I grabbed my shiny black gun and ran into the darkness. I wonder how dangerous it will be? WW

Dear Diary,

I feel like my stomach has bugs crawling around in it. Today I’m having a big war against Germany. I feel so nervous. Please give us good luck! FC

Dear Diary,

Lots of soldiers, lots of dying, lots of trying. I just got back from the landing. I got dropped off and landed on shore. I survived! FV

Dear Diary,

Yesterday, when I got off the shiny silver boat, we all waded into the blue sea. Suddenly, I heard the sound of gun shots running up the dark beach. I smelt smoke from the deafening guns.

As I was running, I heard screams and then got shot in the leg. Without anyone knowing, I got away and that is how I told the story. GH

Dear Diary,

We are here, travelling to France for a deathly war. Swaying side to side, the humungous waves crash on this tiny boat. My tummy has so many butterflies fluttering around.

We stand there really nervous! Will all of us survive? Will we all die? The biggest question, will I see my family and friends again?

I pulled out my gun and got ready for business. EZ

Dear Diary,

Today we got onto the leaf green warships that sailed to the French beach where the Germans were waiting for us. While we were sailing, I could smell the salty ocean water, it made me feel a bit seasick. IK
